Helen Broff: Consultant Pediatric Allergist, London

Dr. Helen Proff is London’s leading Pediatric Allergist and based at The Portland Hospital, she provides expert diagnosis and management of the full range of allergic disorders affecting children, including food allergy, hay fever, eczema, asthma, delayed gastro-intestinal food allergy, insect bite and allergy latex ;

Dr Helen Brough is a Consultant Pediatric Allergist with a Lead Clinical Role at Evelyn Children’s Hospital London and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She is internationally accredited in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Allergy providing the special diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders in children at The Portland Hospital and at HCA UK in The Shard.

Training and experience

Dr Helen Proff graduated from King’s College, Cambridge , with honors in both Medicine and Experimental Psychology before completing her clinical training at Royal Free College and University College London Medical School .

Choosing to specialize in Pediatrics, Helen undertook specialist training at the Pediatric Training Course in South London before taking up a specialist training position in the UK in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology . This prestigious position allowed her to train at three major teaching hospitals in London: Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, King’s College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. During this training, Helen completed her Master’s degree in Allergy from the University of Southampton and her Ph.D. from King’s College London for her work identifying ways to develop a peanut allergy .

Helen is Consultant Pediatric Allergist at Evelna Children’s Hospital London and St Thomas’ Hospital , where she is the clinical lead for pediatric allergy, providing the largest service of its kind in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. In her role in the NHS, she currently runs general allergy clinics and acts as an allergist and respiratory specialist, previously managing allergists, gastroenterologists (joint) and allergy and ENT (joint) clinics. She was also responsible for establishing and maintaining community allergy services, including a primary care education program, and allergy referral services designed to help teens better manage their allergies.

Helen is a lecturer with honors at King’s College London , where she teaches the MSc Pediatrics Program, the MSc Immunology Program, the Academy of Allergy and the Fellowship Program at the Center of International Excellence. She is the co-chair of the 2020 European Allergy Conference (EAACI) to be held in London.

Helen serves on the UK Allergy Health Advisory Board and chairs the National Atopic Eczema Guidance Group at the British Allergy Society and the Medical Care Standards Committee.

Helen speaks English, French, German and Spanish.

Helen’s clinical practice aims to provide comprehensive care for children with allergic disorders using the latest research developments not only to treat existing symptoms, but also to prevent further symptoms. She is now the multi-centre European lead for the Pronuts Study , which looks at how to prevent a new nut allergy in children who have at least one allergy, and was a co-author of the LEAP Study – a pioneering study that showed early introduction of peanuts into the diet of young children. Those with an eczema or egg allergy, may prevent the development of a peanut allergy. In addition, she is an Oral and Wet Ablation Pathway Investigator at Evelna Children’s Hospital London.

Research interests

Helen is actively involved in food allergy prevention research and the development of new treatments for allergic disorders . Being a regular speaker at national and international meetings, she has published original research in the areas of peanut and food allergy as well as reviews on the effective management and prevention of food allergy, diet management to prevent peanut allergy, food exposure risks in an allergic environment and the use of antihistamines in children. She is the author of the textbook Pediatric Rapid and Child Health (Willy-Blackwell, 2010), and has contributed chapters to books on pediatric allergies.
